Who's Invited?

This challenge is intended for individuals or teams as an out of school or hobbyist activity. Participants should be age 13 or older. Whether you have a lot of robotics experience or a little, whether you are a raging robotics maniac or just someone who thinks it sounds like a Saturday of fun, come out to meet other folks who are robot enthusiasts.

Note: This challenge is specifically geared to an older crowd of high school, college, and adults who don't have the opportunity to compete otherwise. However, the top 2 FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams and the Director's Award winning FLL team will be invited to compete as well.

What's the Contest? The 2006 Just for Fun Challenge will be familiar to some. We will be
using the 2005 First Lego League competition "Ocean Odyssey." All information about the challenge can be accessed at https://www.firstlegoleague.org/nobanner.aspx?pid=17940.

What will be provided? Tables, chairs, AC power plugs.

What should you bring?
  • $20.00 Entry Fee - Per robot / team (to be paid on April 1)
  • Your robot competitor, ready to go with minimal modifications
  • A laptop or portable computer if needed.
  • A power strip and an extension cord
  • Storage containers for your model/pieces

The Spirit of the Challenge

The general spirit, or principle, of the contest is to build innovative autonomous (thinking, self controlling) robots which perform the assigned tasks. The goal is to make a robot that makes everyone in the crowd smile. While creating your robot, keep in mind that this is a gentleperson's game

Of course, we'd love to see robots that break loose. However, if the rules are not followed the robots will be considered as demonstration models and not for competition. We will definitely make time for demonstrations if necessary.

Technical Details?

All details of the game can be found at https://www.firstlegoleague.org/nobanner.aspx?pid=17940 under the heading "Robot Game". All rules apply, with the exception that robots are NOT limited to Lego components. The robot can use as many microprocessors as required or any combination of these devices. Any robot design as long as it is autonomous will be allowed. External power is not allowed.

What are the Rules?

1. Robots must be safe (i.e., not firing bricks violently, arcing batteries, etc.). For the time being (although these are overkill) you can refer to the NSTA minimum safety guidelines at: https://www.nsta.org/main/pdfs/440.pdf).
2. Robots can be entered by an individual or a team.
3. No outside control/processing is available. You cannot control your device in realtime with a remote, PC or other device, and please don't interfere (reprogram) another robot's RCX. The idea is autonomous operation.

4. Decisions will be made as a collective group of judges at the event. If a robot entry is deemed as not in the spirit of the challenge, it will be removed from the contest.
5. We can't be held responsible for what could possibly happen - by attending, you waive any rights whatsoever. Simply put, by attending you can't sue us for losing pieces, getting your eyes poked out etc. Photos and videos will be taken, so you're waiving any right for photos by attending too.
