Jr. FLL captures the imagination and minds of 6 to 9 year olds. Each year, FIRST designs a new and exciting challenge to ignite the inherent creativity in young kids. The challenge includes two defined parts: the Show-Me Poster and the Model.
The Show-Me Poster requires kids to illustrate their research and team journey. It provides an opportunity for them to share what they studied and what they learned.
The Model portion of the Challenge gets kids’ hands busy. This is where they build a representation of what they are researching, incorporating simple machines and movement into their LEGO creations. Teams can utilize the LEGO WeDo kit, a LEGO battery box, or hand-generated simple machines to customize their models.
Rhode Island's JR. FLL Think Tank Expo was part of the FLL Robot Invitational on January 24, 2015 at Bryant University, Smithfield, RI. Teams can also participate in the Global Jr. FLL Showcase.
Teams must be registered with FIRST to be part of the Jr.FLL program. Registration wil open in August 2015. The national registration fee is $50.
Teams can use their own LEGO to create models or purchase a kit sold through LEGO Education for Jr. FLL teams at the time of registration. The kit cost approximately $149.
Teams also pay a fee to participate in a local Jr. FLL EXPO. Information on the Expo will be emailed to registered teams late in 2015.
Teams include 2 to 6 children, ages 6-9.
The upper age limit of 9 is “hard”, students who turned 9 before January 1, 2012 are not eligible to participate in the Jr. FLL Super Seniors season.
The lower age limit is “soft”. If the coach feels a younger student is capable and interested in participating on a Jr. FLL team, they are allowed to participate.
Teams may be made up of neighborhood groups, school groups, homeschooling families or associations, Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, family members or after school programs.
Teams generally meet for 6-8 weeks. Team meetings last between 1-2 hours once a week. Many teams meet after school or during another group activity, such as during a Scout or Boy Scout troop meeting.
Please note that FIRST and FLL Rhode Island/Rhode Island Students of the Future does not create teams or match children to teams. Any adult can start a team. FIRST offers a database that parents can search when looking for an existing team for their child to join.
There’s always something new to learn, as Junior FIRST® LEGO® League teams will find out this season. In the 2015 Waste Wise season, teams will explore trash!

Each year, Jr.FLL® presents a new and exciting Challenge to ignite the inherent creativity in young children. While exploring the real-world theme, teams will learn about simple machines as they build a model made of LEGO® elements with a motorized part. They will also learn to present information through a Show Me Poster. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under Jr.FLL’s signature set of Core Values.
